DAPPALAM...VEGETABLE STEW/PULUSU  WITH PUMPKIN

Dappalam..is a stew made with various kinds of vegetables..the important vegetables are yellow pumpkin ,bottle gourd , bhendi, sweet potato ,drumsticks etc. This stew is made in vegetarian marriage functions and religious sat sanghs get togethers etc.We are presenting how to  make the stew here ..

Materials...





  • Chopped pumkin pieces..each 1/2 cup
  •  Chopped bottle gourd /lauki/anapakaya pieces
  • Chopped sweet potato
  • Chopped drumsticks
  • Chopped bhendi
  • Green chillies..4 to 5
  • Tamarind..big lime size                                      Add 2 cups water and squeeze fully the thick juice and throw the pulp..
  • Turmeric powder...1/4 tsp
  • Jaggery powder 2 to 3 tbsp.. if sweet liking people add a bit more jaggery
  • Corriander leaves..chopped 2 handfulls
  •  Curry leaves..chopped
  • Salt..to taste
  • Rice flour..2 tbsp
For seasoning...
  • Oil...3to 4 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds..1tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds..1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida...a pinch
  • Red chillies..3 no.s make slits

Method...
  • Place a pan on the stove add 4 cups of water ,add pumpkin ,bottle gourd ,sweet potato ,drumsticks ,and boil for 5 minutes in medium flame.
  • After 5 minutes when it starts boiling,add green chilli slits ,and bhendi chop,and let it boil for another 5 min.
  • Now add prepared thick tamarind juice to the veggies and boil..add half quantity of corriander  and curry leaves.
  • Make Tadka with oil..and mustard and fenugreek seeds along with jeera ,asafoetida and red chilli slits..in a pan..keep aside.
  • By now,the vegetables  are cooked..so add prepared Tadka, and also add jaggery , corriander and curry leaves chop..add Salt...and let it boil.
  • Lastly, add 1 to 2 table spoons rice flour ,in 1/2 cup of water..mix well ,add to the boiling stew.. let it boil for 5 minutes in low flame.
  • Lastly add corriander and curry leaves and switch off the stove.

A yummy stew/pulusu very soft and comforting dish for all.. goes well with warm rice and ghee...
